Drukpath Trek – 11 Days

Day 1 :

<p>Day 1 Kathmandu-Paro:</p><p>On arrival in Paro our guide will welcome you and will go with you to your hotel to check in. After lunch we will visit the National Museum and the Paro Dzong. We will end the day with a walk around Paro. </p><p>Overnight in Paro, altitude: 2200m</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 2 Paro:</p><p>A hike to the Tiger’s Nest temple, which is the most revered of the Buddhist temples, will take most of our morning. In the afternoon we will visit the Kyichu Lhakhang Temple.</p><p>Overnight in Paro, altitude: 2200m</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 3 | Paro - Jela Dzong: Distance: 10k. Walk time: 6h. Night altitude: 3000m.</p><p>The beginning of the Drukpath trek is at the historic Ta Dzong National Museum. We follow a dirty road until we reach our trail in the pine forest. The trail is uphill all the way till Jela Dzong, a temple built as a war fortress in the olden days, overlooking the Paro valley.</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 4 | Jela Dzong – Jangchublakha: Distance: 10km. Walk time: 4h. Night altitude: 3200m.</p><p>We begin with a one and a half hour steep climb which becomes more gradual upwards. The trail takes us through thick alpine forests and rhododendrons. You will have nice views of the Chomolhari and other snow capped peaks if the weather is right and you may hear the call from some “monal” pheasants. You may see yak herds around your campsite.</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 5 | Jangchublakha – Jimilangtsho: Distance: 13km. Walk time: 6h. Night altitude: 3300m.</p><p>The trek starts off with a climb overlooking the valleys below. Rhododendrons and other high altitude shrubs decorate the rocky trail which goes up and down. On a clear day, both the Chomolhari and the Jichu Drake peaks can be seen. Our camp is at the lake of Jimilangtsho.</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 6 | Jimilangtsho – Labana: Distance: 15km. Walk time: 7h. Night altitude: 3500m.</p><p>The trail takes us through dwarf rhododendrons and junipers. We pass the lakes of Janatso and Simkotha. You will be able to see the far ridge across the valley where we will trek later. The temperature at this campsite will be the lowest of the all the nights.</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 7 | Labana – Thimphu: Distance: 12km. Walk time: 6h. Pass to cross: Pumo La, 4200m.</p><p>An hour climb from the camp takes us over the highest pass of this trek at 4100m. On a clear day we can see the Gangkhar Puensum, the highest peak in Bhutan. Descending from the pass over rocky steps, we will be greeted by the sight of Thimphu far below in the valley. From this point on, we descend all the way to Thimphu and pass through the temple and meditation center complex of Phajoding. Our transport will meet us just as we start emerging from the forest. </p><p>Overnight in Thimphu, altitude: 2400m</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 8 | Explore Thimphu:</p><p>We visit the National Memorial Chorten (monument), the Textile Museum, Folk Heritage Museum, Takin zoo, the National Library, the Government Handicrafts and the Handicrafts Emporium.</p><p>Overnight in Thimphu, altitude: 2400m</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 9 | Thimphu – Punakha: Distance: 80km. Drive time: 2½h. Drive to Punakha over the Dochu La pass at 3000m.</p><p>If we are lucky with the weather we can see the entire Bhutanese Himalayas from this pass from east of Chomolhari to Gangkhar Puensum. After lunch we visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong after which we go for a short drive to the upper Punakha valley and hike for 45 minutes to the beautiful Chorten temple of Khamsum Yuley on a hill.</p><p>Overnight in Punakha, altitude: 1250m</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 10 | Punakha – Paro:</p><p>We start off our day with a short hike to the temple, which will take us through a village surrounded by rice fields. We have lunch at the Dochu La after which we resume our drive to Paro. </p><p>Overnight in Paro, altitude: 2200m</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Day 11 Paro-Kathmandu: Early morning flight from Paro International airport.</p>
