The Ghorepani – Poon Hill Trek is very popular and the best ‘short and sweet’ trip into the hills of Nepal. It is an ideal trek for families with children, or those seeking a taste of Nepal and even for honeymoon couples – well, some perhaps!
The forests around Ghorepani have long been famed for their rhododendrons (Laligurans), where they appear in three main colours – red, pink and white. The rhododendron is the national flower of Nepal. The trek offers a truly representative kaleidoscope of Nepal in just a few short days – spectacular mountain scenery, along with charming villages and picturesque farming terraces. Along the way are the friendly inhabitants, always quick to greet the traveller. The region is home to Gurungs and Poon (Magar) people.
The forests are alive with abundant birdlife. Higher up above the tree line is Poon Hill (3210m), the most famous and spectacular viewpoint, from where we can enjoy a fabulous sunrise over the whole Himalayan range and the surrounding mountains. From here you can see a wide panorama, from Churen Himal in the west to Machhapuchhre in the east. The other peaks on offer are Dhaulagiri (8167m), Tukuche Peak (6920m), Dhampus Peak (6012m), Nilgiri South and East (6839m), Annapurna (8091m), Baraha Shikhar/Fang (7647m), Annapurna South (7219m) and Hiunchuli (6434m), as well as the deep gorge of the Kali Gandaki valley.
This trek starts from Nayapul and crosses the Modi Khola river before ascending through farms into the forest. Our route continues up a series of famous Gurung stone staircases, through a variety of Gurung villages, and concludes after a short road journey to Pokhara.
