The Helambu trekking region is quite close to the Kathmandu Valley and hence is an easily visited destination. Higher up it has excellent views of the main snowy peaks of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lhakpa, Gauri Shankar and Ganesh Himal. Most of this trekking route keeps to relatively low altitudes and it is considered to be one of the best areas for a short trek from Kathmandu. The trek lies mostly below 3000m; the high point is Tharepati La pass (3600m). From the Helambu area, it is a stiff but spectacular climb to the holy lake at Gosainkund for those who wish to include that viewpoint.
The trek begins from either from Sundarijal, a 2hr drive from downtown Kathmandu or from Syabrubesi, which is a 7–8hr drive from Kathmandu.
